ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance to programs serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including assisting programs meet the unique needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing across the continuum of placement options.

Important Session Information:


This online, three-day Visual Phonics workshop consists of six, one-hour and thirty-minute sessions. Each day includes two sessions which last from 8:30 - 11:45 AM and includes a fifteen-minute break between sessions.

This workshop explores the multi-sensory Visual Phonics program and its benefits in reinforcing oral language, speech, and beginning literacy skills for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, bilingual, or possess diverse learning needs. This workshop develops the skills necessary to implement Visual Phonics in therapeutic and instructional settings. Participants will learn to recognize, produce, and blend the Visual Phonics hand cues and written symbols for the 42+ English phonemes. This workshop also explores research-based strategies to support beginning spelling and reading instruction with the support of Visual Phonics in therapeutic and instructional settings. Participants are provided opportunities to practice techniques for teaching: Letter Recognition, Phoneme awareness, and Phoneme-grapheme (sound-symbol) association. The training is most appropriate for anyone who works with students who are struggling in their beginning reading and writing development, auditory discrimination abilities, and speech production abilities (e.g. struggling students in the general education classroom, students who are in special education, who are deaf and hard of hearing, bilingual).

**Select Visual Phonics materials will be provided with registration upon completion of the training.** 

**This program has been approved for 9 clock hours of continuing education credit by the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (TSHA). TSHA approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.**

**Participants must attend all three days to receive credit. Partial credits are not available.**

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • The class sessions will not be recorded and are only available at the scheduled dates and times. Participants must attend all eight sessions to receive credit; partial credit will not be given. Attendance will be taken each session.
  • This online class is conducted via Zoom. Each participant will need an internet accessible, and audio and video -enabled device (such as a laptop computer, iPad or phone). A Zoom account is not needed to run Zoom or to participate.
  • This is a live, interactive workshop. The video will need to be turned on to participate. This will allow me to check participants’ production of the Visual Phonics handshapes and make sure participants’ productions are accurate. Participants will not receive credit for the class if their video is off.
