The Abacus Bee is a full-day Mental MATH competition with FIVE 20–30-minute contests and ONE hour-long diction contest. The purpose of this type of competition is to generate interest and promote math skills among students who are blind or with low vision. Participants will include children identified as visually impaired in 1st through 12th grades.
Students will compete with other students of the same ability throughout their competition levels. Tests will be available in Large Print, UEB Braille or Nemeth Braille. The use of an abacus is preferred, however not required.
Students may use an abacus, mental math, finger math, counting cubes, or other manipulatives. Calculators or paper & pencil algorithms or other written computations are not allowed.
