This professional development session, presented by Dr. Gail Cheramie, is designed to provide school psychologists, diagnosticians, dyslexia evaluators, providers of dyslexia services, and other school personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively evaluate students suspected of having a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in the areas of reading with a focus on Dyslexia. Participants will gain an understanding of the legal requirements and guidelines specific to Texas for identifying and serving students with a SLD in dyslexia.
Through a combination of presentations, case studies, and interactive activities, participants will learn about the characteristics of dyslexia, evidence-based assessment practices, and the role of the evaluation team in the special education eligibility process. The session will also cover the use of appropriate assessment tools and techniques, including the use of the Dyslexia Handbook published by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Texas House Bill 3928, and the Guidance of the Comprehensive Evaluation of Specific Learning Disabilities.
Participants will leave the session with practical strategies and resources to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of special education evaluations for a SLD in the areas of reading with a focus on dyslexia, ensuring that students receive the support they need to succeed academically.
