This hands-on Welding Professional Development workshop is designed for teachers of welding programs who wish to train their students to become certified in the (AWS) American Welding Society, AWS D 1.1 and AWS D 1.9 industry-based certifications.
Special Guest Instructor is Mr. Rich Depue, MS. Ed., AWS SCWI, API-510, 577, 1169, NWIS Pipeline Hydro-Test Inspector, The Certified Welding and Testing Company
The professional development workshop will take place at Poteet High School, 1020 FM – 1470, Poteet, TX 78065 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, July 10, 11, and 12, 2024. Workshop times will be 8:00am to 4:00pm each day. Be prepared to enter at the front of the school for security unless otherwise directed by signage, and be prepared to show your government issued ID for security at the school.
Please carefully read the agenda included below for a clear understanding of the workshop. All participants should bring their own welding helmet, welding gloves, and welding apron plus eye and ear protection PPEs. Wear proper clothing and footwear for this professional development that would be appropriate for a welding lab/shop.

Day 1: Overview of TEA Welding IBCs-
Classroom, Wednesday July 10, 2024. 8 AM to 4 PM
AWS D1.1, AWS D9.1, API 1104 IBCs- Feasibility for Ag Mech and Welding programs
Implementing TEA IBCs, filling out and interpreting applicable documentation
AWS SENSE Program Introduction and overview- How to implement. How to certify.
AWS SENSE Modularized Program- Occupational Orientation, Welding Health, and Safety
Day 2: AWS SENSE Curriculum Delivery-
Thursday July 11, 2024, 8 AM to 4 PM
AM Classroom theory: Basic oxy-fuel, Gas Metal Arc Welding
PM Classroom theory: Drawings and Welding Symbols, Weld Inspection.
Review of SENSE assessment and shop audit documentation
Day 3: AWS SENSE-
Hands on, Friday July 12, 2024. 8 AM to 4 PM
Instructor demonstrations of all SENSE testing joints and workmanship projects
Welding of the QC-10 2G and 3G V-groove joints. Welding of a QC-10 workmanship project.
Teacher training on how to administer, submit, view, and interpret SENSE qualification testing docs.
Portions of SENSE testing may not be completed in this three-day session and may be finished at the teachers’ home school and/or online as applicable.
All participants will receive:
Professional development credit hours, certificate of training and welder certification wallet card, if applicable.
Online welder qualification/certification profile in the international certification registry, if applicable.
Virtual SENSE Training content to complete mod level 1, welder testing lesson plans, instructional lesson plans,
AWS SENSE Entry Level Certification (upon passing classroom, weld shop and online quizzes)
Materials and supplies needed for the workshop that will be provided at the Poteet high school site:
1/4" x 2” x 6” steel plates for D9.1
3/8” x 3” x 6” steel plates for D1.1 and SENSE
3/8” x 6” x 6” steel plate for SENSE Project
Welding rods and MIG wire/gas.
Participants fee includes all books, tools and certifications.
