Words Matter – Understanding Our Historical Documents



ESC-20 provides professional development and technical assistance to support educators with implementation of the Social Studies TEKS, analyze data to enhance instructional practices to meet the needs of students, and provides targeted support to reach campus and district goals.

Join us for an insightful session on the power of language in shaping history. This discussion will explore the significance of words in foundational documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and other pivotal texts. We will examine how specific language choices reflect the values, intentions, and debates of their time, as well as their lasting impact on society today. Through close reading and interactive discussion, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of how words frame rights, responsibilities, and national identity. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a student, or simply curious about the meaning behind the words that define our democracy, this session will provide valuable perspectives on the role of language in our nation’s past.
