The Science of Reading is a body of research that clearly identifies five key components of literacy instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and text comprehension. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) often lag behind their hearing counterparts academically and commonly exhibit deficits in literacy acquisition. With limited or no access to sound, how can students who are DHH learn to read when several key components of literacy development are based on accessing sound? In this session, participants will explore evidence-based research to show how the principles of the Science of Reading can be used to develop literacy skills in students who are DHH.
