Early Childhood
Phonemic Awareness in PreK

Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20) provides assistance to districts in the successful development and implementation of a school readiness integration model of coordinated funding that brings school districts, Head Start programs and child care providers together in a mixed delivery model.  ESC-20 also provides leadership to ensure the effective regional implementation of appropriate instructional strategies in early childhood settings through technical assistance and professional development in the areas of developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum and supports parents with Pre-Kindergarten information and eligibility criteria.

Important Session Information:

This session will explore practical and engaging ways to integrate phonemic awareness (the most advanced skill in the phonological continuum) instruction seamlessly into the daily routines of Pre-Kindergarten classrooms. Participants will learn how to leverage existing activities, such as circle time, transitions, and play-based learning, to foster children's understanding of sounds in spoken words. We'll cover key phonological awareness skills that are necessary to support phonemic awareness mastery and provide concrete strategies and examples for implementation.
