The Power of Math Talk: Creating a Culture of Student Discourse

ESC-20 provides professional development and technical assistance to support educators with implementation of the Mathematics TEKS by analyzing data to enhance instructional practices to meet the needs of students, and provides targeted support to reach campus and district goals.

Important Session Information:

What students say about math—and how they say it—matters. This session explores the power of mathematical discourse to deepen understanding, build confidence, and promote equity in the classroom. When students are encouraged to talk about their thinking, they develop stronger reasoning skills, learn from one another, and take greater ownership of their learning.

Participants will engage with high-impact strategies that support rich math conversations, including talk moves, discussion routines, and sentence stems that help all students participate meaningfully. Together, we’ll explore ways to create a classroom culture where mistakes are valued, ideas are challenged respectfully, and every student’s voice is heard.

Whether you’re looking to strengthen your facilitation of math discussions or reimagine how students share their thinking, this session will provide the tools, structures, and inspiration to make math talk a daily habit in your classroom.
