Coaching Lab: Learning Walks for Math Leadership



ESC-20 provides professional development and technical assistance to support educators with implementation of the Mathematics TEKS by analyzing data to enhance instructional practices to meet the needs of students, and provides targeted support to reach campus and district goals.
 


Leadership Effectiveness

Important Session Information:


Purpose:
Train school leaders to conduct non-evaluative, math-focused learning walks that strengthen instruction and build a culture of mathematical thinking.

Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose and structure of learning walks.

  • Identify key "look-fors" in effective math classrooms:

    1. Mathematical Discourse

    2. Multiple Representations

    3. Problem-Solving and Reasoning

  • Practice collecting objective classroom evidence.

  • Plan how to implement learning walks at their sites.

Session Overview:

  • Introduction: Explore the purpose and norms of learning walks (focus on students/tasks, not teacher evaluation).

  • Look-Fors: Define what high-quality math instruction looks like using structured indicators.

  • Practice: Simulate learning walks with real classroom video clips; practice evidence collection and debriefing.

  • Planning: Create an action plan for launching math learning walks in schools.

  • Reflection: Reflect on how learning walks can shift school math culture.
