This workshop provides educators, therapists, and adapted physical education specialists with hands-on knowledge of the most widely used adapted PE assessments and how to apply them effectively across various student populations. Participants will explore four key tools—CTAPE, TGMD-3, AMSAT, and Project MOBILITEE—each designed to evaluate motor skills, track student progress, and guide the development of individualized education plan (IEP) goals.
-
CTAPE (California Teaching Adapted Physical Education): A comprehensive assessment that takes time to learn but offers valuable insights into student eligibility and performance, supporting long-term program planning.
-
TGMD-3 (Test of Gross Motor Development): A norm-referenced assessment for children ages 5–10, best suited for ambulatory students. Easy to administer and interpret, TGMD-3 helps identify age-appropriate motor skill abilities.
-
AMSAT (Apache Motor Skills Assessment Test): Similar to TGMD-3 but designed for older students ages 10–19. AMSAT is also norm-referenced, providing reliable results for ambulatory learners while highlighting areas for skill development.
-
BPFT (Brockport Physical Fitness Test) Overview of the 27 sub-tests comprising the BPFT. Strategies and approaches for administering the test in an adapted physical education setting. Exploring activities and games that can improve students' strength, flexibility, and aerobic capacity, specifically tailored for individuals with different abilities
-
Project MOBILITEE: A detailed tool specifically valuable for students with multiple impairments. It emphasizes individualized goals, with structured guidance for writing IEP objectives tailored to students who have complex needs.
Through case studies, demonstrations, and practical applications, this session will highlight the strengths and limitations of each assessment, helping educators select the most appropriate tool for their students. Attendees will also learn strategies for translating assessment results into meaningful goals, ensuring that every student—whether ambulatory, wheelchair-bound, or multiply impaired—has access to a supportive and inclusive physical education experience.
By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to:
-
Choose the right assessment tool based on student needs and age.
-
Administer and interpret results effectively.
-
Translate results into actionable, individualized IEP goals.
-
Support students across a wide range of abilities, ensuring access and inclusive practices in physical education programs.
This workshop equips educators with adaptable resources, empowering them to evaluate ability while fostering growth, independence, and lifelong movement skills.
