Learning Off Site Observation 3-Day Learning Lab (18 hours G/T Credit)

The Gifted and Talented program at Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20) promotes and supports the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented students through professional development and technical assistance. This is accomplished by advocating, designing and providing an array of learning experiences for teachers and administrators of gifted and talented students in order to enable them to provide a nurturing environment in which these students with special abilities, unique needs, and diverse backgrounds are recognized.

Important Session Information:

Session includes all three days.
Observation Learning Lab 1: The Affective Environment (Day 2 Focus)
In this lab, educators observe how the "Grit Mindset" framework creates a safe space for all students to engage in productive struggle. Participants will analyze SEL strategies used with students to determine how they can be adjusted to mitigate perfectionism in gifted learners or support the unique frustrations of twice exceptional (2E) students. You will provide reflective feedback on shifting classroom culture from "compliance" to "courageous risk-taking" for every learner profile and provide a mini-lesson that can be used to build this skill and mindset.
Observation Learning Lab 2: The Inquiry & Complexity Lab (Day 3 Focus)
This session demonstrates how to manage a high-energy, hands-on classroom while transitioning from teacher-led instruction to encourage student-guided inquiry. Teachers will observe students using real-world tools and provide ideas and feedback on how to "layer" the activity with Depth and Complexity prompts to challenge high-ability thinkers without losing the general population. The goal is to reflect on how technical tasks can be modified into open-ended inquiries that allow 2E students to demonstrate brilliance through non-traditional products.
Observation Learning Lab 3: The Innovation & Design Lab (Day 4 Focus)
Participants will observe the intersection of digital CAD design and physical engineering, focusing on how open-ended projects reveal hidden student interests and aptitudes. You will evaluate the implementation of these design challenges and collaborate on ways to bridge the content into one of the TPSP independent research projects to benefit your gifted learners. This lab requires drafting a "Design Choice Menu" or an "Individualized Learning Contract" that outlines specific, high-level challenges for your advanced or 2E learners to tackle within a standard unit.
