The landscape of primary science instruction is evolving. With the introduction of the new English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) TEKS, the focus has shifted from simple vocabulary lists to integrated, language-rich scientific discovery. This session is designed to help K–3 educators bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and language acquisition, ensuring every young learner can think, talk, and write like a scientist—regardless of their primary language.
In this hands-on workshop, we will deconstruct the new ELPS-TEKS requirements specifically through the lens of the K–3 science classroom. Participants will explore how to embed linguistic supports into the 5E Instructional Model, transforming "science time" into a powerhouse for both conceptual understanding and language development.
We will move beyond basic "sentence stems" to explore how high-leverage instructional strategies—such as total physical response, visual scaffolding, and collaborative academic conversations—can be seamlessly woven into your existing science lessons.
Note to Educators: Bring a copy of an upcoming science unit or lesson plan! We will spend the final portion of the session "ELPS-proofing" your materials so you leave ready to teach tomorrow morning.
