The landscape of science instruction is evolving. With the introduction of the new English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) TEKS, the focus has shifted from simple vocabulary lists to integrated, language-rich scientific discovery. This session is designed to help 4-12 educators bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and language acquisition, ensuring every young learner can think, talk, and write like a scientist—regardless of their primary language.
In this hands-on workshop, we will deconstruct the new ELPS-TEKS requirements specifically through the lens of the 4-12 science classroom. Participants will explore how to embed linguistic supports into the 5E Instructional Model, transforming "science time" into a powerhouse for both conceptual understanding and language development.
We will move beyond basic "sentence stems" to explore how high-leverage instructional strategies—such as total physical response, visual scaffolding, and collaborative academic conversations—can be seamlessly woven into your existing science lessons.
Note to Educators: Bring a copy of an upcoming science unit or lesson plan! We will spend the final portion of the session "ELPS-proofing" your materials so you leave ready to teach tomorrow morning.
