VIRTUAL Blended Youth Mental Health First Aid



Professional development for school counselors is aligned with the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and supports work in the four service delivery components: Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support.


 


Important Session Information:


Target Audience: School personnel who regularly interact with students, adults working with youth and adolescents

Attention: This session is a blended virtual course. Participants are required to complete 2 hours of self-paced pre-course work prior to attending the live, virtual, instructor-led portion of the training. *Instructions for the pre-course work will not be provided until a week prior to the instructor led training date.*

Description: Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge.

Course Content:

Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance use challenges.

How to interact with a child or adolescent in a crisis and non-crisis situations.

How to connect youth to help

Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying

Learn how to respond with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE)

Communication: Instructors for this course are representatives from the local mental health authorities that serve Region 20 districts, including Bluebonnet Trails Community Services, Camino Real Community Services, The Center for Health Care Services, or Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers. 

You will receive email communication from the instructors regarding registration for a MHFA Connect account at least 5 days prior to the session date.
