Early Childhood
Writing as a Process in PK

Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20) provides assistance to districts in the successful development and implementation of a school readiness integration model of coordinated funding that brings school districts, Head Start programs and child care providers together in a mixed delivery model.  ESC-20 also provides leadership to ensure the effective regional implementation of appropriate instructional strategies in early childhood settings through technical assistance and professional development in the areas of developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum and supports parents with Pre-Kindergarten information and eligibility criteria.

Academic Performance

Important Session Information:

In Pre-K, the writing process begins with emergent literacy, where children discover that their drawings and "scribble-writing" carry specific meaning and stories. Teachers encourage this development by inviting students to dictate their ideas, bridging the gap between spoken words and written symbols. Through fine motor play and sensory exploration, children build the physical strength and confidence needed to eventually transition from abstract marks to recognizable letters.
