In-Person Youth Mental Health First Aid



Professional development for school counselors is aligned with the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and supports work in the four service delivery components: Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support.


 


Important Session Information:


Target Audience: School personnel who regularly interact with students, adults working with youth and adolescents

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge.

This course covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance use challenges.

  • How to interact with a child or adolescent in a crisis and non crisis situation.
  • How to connect youth to help.
  • Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying
  • Learn how to respond with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE)
