GT UPDATE: Activities That Promote Productive Struggle in the 3rd-5th Grade Math Classroom

ESC-20 provides professional development and technical assistance to support educators with implementation of the Mathematics TEKS by analyzing data to enhance instructional practices to meet the needs of students, and provides targeted support to reach campus and district goals.

Important Session Information:

Session Overview: Moving students from "I can't" to "I can figure this out" is one of the most difficult parts of teaching upper elementary math. This workshop focuses on the pedagogical shift required to support students as they grapple with complex, non-routine problems.

What We Will Cover:

  • The Struggle Spectrum: Distinguishing between productive challenge and cognitive overload.

  • The Power of Discourse: Using "Talk Moves" to facilitate student-to-student debate and reasoning.

  • Task Selection: How to modify your existing curriculum to create "Low-Floor, High-Ceiling" tasks that invite all students in while pushing advanced learners.

  • Classroom Culture: Practical scripts and routines to normalize making mistakes and revising thinking.

This session is for educators who teach or support math in grades 3-5.

This session can count as the G/T 6 hour update.
