NEW ELPS: Understanding, Unpacking, and Application
This 3-hour interactive session is designed for teachers, instructional coaches, interventionists, and all educators supporting emergent bilingual (EB) students across grade levels and content areas. Grounded in the current guidance provided by the Texas Education Agency, participants will engage in a deeper exploration of the 2026–2027 English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) implementation and develop practical strategies for classroom application.
Throughout the session, participants will examine the major updates to the new ELPS, deconstruct and unpack the student expectations, and explore how the revised structure impacts instruction, language development, and student support. Special attention will be given to grade bands, language domains, language objectives, and instructional application across content areas.
Through hands-on activities aligned with CBLI instructional methods, participants will:
-
Analyze and unpack the revised ELPS and Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLDs)
-
Explore grade-band expectations and connections across language domains
-
Develop and refine language objectives aligned to content instruction
-
Identify practical scaffolds, supports, and application strategies for EB students
-
Engage with classroom resources and tools to support implementation and instructional planning
-
Explore strategies that promote language development across content areas
This session is designed to move beyond an introductory overview by providing educators with opportunities to actively engage with the student expectations, deepen their understanding of the changes, and begin applying the new ELPS into instructional planning and daily classroom practice.
