Presented By: Gracee Condor, ESC-20 Special Education Evaluation Consultant and Samuel Gonzalez, ESC-20 Post-Secondary Transition Consultant
This 1.5-hour professional development session equips Texas special education evaluation staff with the legal knowledge and practical framework necessary to draft high-quality, compliant Summaries of Performance (SOP). As students receiving special education services prepare to exit public education—either through graduation or by exceeding age eligibility—the SOP serves as their primary tool for securing accommodations in postsecondary education, employment, and independent living.
The session will clarify complex state-specific nuances, such as determining when a formal evaluation report must legally be included alongside the SOP based on the student's specific graduation pathway (e.g., modified curriculum vs. standard expectations). Moving beyond basic checkbox compliance, this session offers best practices for translating dense evaluation data, Full Individual and Initial Evaluations (FIIEs), and Review of Existing Evaluation Data (REED) reports into accessible, student-centered functional summaries that promote self-advocacy.
This session will help participants:
- Apply federal and Texas requirements to determine appropriate procedures and documentation when completing a Summary of Performance.
- Synthesize evaluation and educational data into accessible summaries of a student’s academic achievement and functional performance.
- Develop individualized recommendations that connect student strengths, needs, and accommodations to postsecondary goals and postsecondary transition planning.
