Presented By: Gracee Condor, MA, NCSP, Special Education Evaluation Consultant
Designed for Texas providers of Counseling as a Related Service, this interactive 3-hour professional development session demystifies the role of counseling as a related service. Participants will journey from foundational legal definitions under IDEA and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to the practical realities of implementation.
The session will cover the distinct boundaries of related services, the specific nuances of school-based counseling, and how to conduct comprehensive, legally defensible evaluations. Finally, we will tackle the often-tricky process of using data to establish appropriate frequency, duration, and location for the ARD committee's consideration. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to ensure compliance, maintain ethical boundaries, and foster meaningful student progress.
By the end of this 3-hour session, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate counseling as a related service from other school-based counseling and mental health supports.
- Explain how counseling as a related service supports a student’s ability to benefit from special education.
- Identify evaluation data needed to determine whether counseling is required for a student to benefit from special education.
- Apply evaluation data to develop individualized recommendations regarding the frequency, duration, and location of counseling services.
- Communicate evaluation findings and service recommendations to support informed ARD committee decision-making.
