As students transition into the upper elementary grades, place value shifts from a basic counting tool to the absolute backbone of multi-digit arithmetic, decimals, and algebraic thinking. Are your students just memorizing the columns, or do they truly understand the relationship between them?
This dynamic, hands-on session bridges the gap between concrete modeling and abstract understanding for numbers into the thousands and beyond. We will explore how to help students visualize that a digit in one place represents 10 times what it represents in the place to its right. Using powerful visual models like open number lines, place value blocks, and place value disks, you will walk away with a toolkit of interactive games and tasks that build genuine number sense of whole numbers and decimals and set students up for success with all operations.
This session is designed for 3rd-5th grade math educators, Special Education teachers, and Instructional Coaches.
