AI Tools: Introduction to Google Gemini Gems

Teaching and Learning Services Online Professional Development

Important Session Information:

Prerequisite: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
This course will provide an introduction to Google’s Gem tool. A Gem is a custom, reusable version of Gemini that you train to do a specific job. It remembers your instructions, your tone, and your background information so you never have to repeat yourself.

Gems can operate in learning mode to ‘teach’ content or or subjects based on the instructions and resources you provide. Gems can be created to coach students through writing assignments without writing for them!

Gems can be assigned via Google Classroom or shared with colleagues.

Why Gemini? If using Gemini within your school account, Google will not use your chats or uploaded information to train their AI model. Humans do not review chats and all interactions with Gemini remain within your school’s domain.

NOTE: Google announced in October 2026 that Gems will be transitioned into Skills for education accounts effective June 2027. All work in Gems will be transitioned into the new Skills capability, integrated within Gemini. Watch for an upcoming course focusing on the transition!

Included at no cost for Elevate20, Tech20 Premier, and Library Services Cooperative Members.
