Memory is an ubiquitous component of daily life. Indeed, it is our memories of ourselves, our lives, and our families, that make us who we are. Memory is also at the root of learning, and memory issues are related to numerous learning difficulties. Memory patterns, including intact and dysfunctional memory systems, also provide a unique window into the integrity of brain function at all ages. This workshop describes the development, structure, administration, and interpretation of the most comprehensive memory battery available, the Test of Memory and Learning, Second Edition (TOMAL-2) for ages 5 years through 59 years. Information related to reliability and validity of TOMAL-2 scores is reviewed briefly. Basic understanding of memory processes is also emphasized throughout the workshop as is the relationship of memory assessment to diagnosis and intervention. At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees should:
- Understand the importance of memory assessment;
- Understand the development and structure of the TOMAL-2
- Be able to apply basic interpretive strategies to the TOMAL-2;
- Be prepared to learn the administration and scoring of the TOMAL-2 with minimal practice;
- Apply knowledge of learning curves; and
- Apply the results of a comprehensive memory assessment to diagnosis and development of effective interventions.
