Special Education Curriculum & Instruction
Let’s Get Real! Equipping Students to Succeed in Expository Text Reading

ESC-20 provides training and technical support related to inclusive services for students with disabilities to gain access to the general curriculum. These supports provide strategies so students with disabilities are actively involved and progress within the general curriculum and on state assessements.

Teacher Quality

Important Session Information:

Expository text reading accounts for the majority of reading we do as adults, yet reporting
category 3 on the STAAR test results indicate that this is the type of reading students struggle with the most. Learning how to read to learn requires the reader to intentionally select skills and strategies in order to think within, beyond, and about factual texts. In this three part series, participants will deepen content knowledge and examine the TEKS SE’s for information texts. Each day, we will plan for helping students actively and strategically process texts.

Day 1 (Dec. 14, 2017) Learn how teachers and readers plan for comprehension

Day 2 (Feb. 15, 2018) Learn how to teach students to summarize, make inferences, and   process informational texts

Day 3 (Mar. 27, 2018) Learn strategies for teaching students to go beyond the words on the    page and think critically about texts

Each day, participants will leave with ready-to-use strategies and techniques, as well as a
deeper knowledge of the reading process.

No registration fee.
This training is paid for by the Statewide PGC Network Grant from TEA.

This training is designed to target students with disabilities served in general education settings, but will assist teachers with all struggling learners in all settings.
