Introduction to the Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test (Ortiz PVAT)



ESC-20 provides resources, training and technical assistance for evaluators. Quarterly contact group meetings for LSSP’s and Educational Diagnosticians are also provided.
 



Important Session Information:


The English language learner population is growing in the United States, and practitioners are tasked with evaluating youth whose first language may not be English (Ortiz, 2018). Given the growing diversity in the United States, the Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test (PVAT) was developed with four goals. First, the Ortiz PVAT was developed to focus on the development of language acquisition skills. The acquisition of the English language is used as a common metric for all youth. Second, the Ortiz PVAT was designed to be applicable with both native English speakers as well as English language learners. Third, the Ortiz PVAT wanted to provide valid results, regardless of the child’s native language. Finally, it was essential that the Ortiz PVAT did not require the evaluator to be bilingual and/or multilingual.

The Ortiz PVAT is a powerful, psychometrically sound assessment that will assist school psychologists who are committed to Best Practices. The Ortiz PVAT is the first receptive vocabulary assessment administered digitally that can be used to fairly and accurately assess both English speakers and English learners between the ages of 2 years 6 months and 22 years 11 months. By controlling for an individual’s exposure to learning English, the Ortiz PVAT makes it possible to evaluate an individual from any language background and determine whether English vocabulary acquisition is following the expected pattern of native or second language acquisition or may instead suggest a language problem or disorder. The Ortiz PVAT normative sample is reflective of US Census data, and 53 languages are represented in the normative sample. Attendees will be provided with an overview of the standardization and psychometric properties of the Ortiz PVAT. In addition to this, the content, administration, scoring, and interpretation will be discussed. Participants will learn how to use the Ortiz PVAT through case study examples. Participants will receive sample Ortiz PVAT materials.
