Best Practices for Evaluation of Dyslexia and Specific Learning Disability in Reading



ESC-20 provides resources, training and technical assistance for evaluators. Quarterly contact group meetings for LSSP’s and Educational Diagnosticians are also provided.

Important Session Information:


This workshop will address best practices in identifying dyslexia and reading disorders and how to link with targeted, research supported interventions. Historical reading research and its relevance to today’s practices for dyslexia and Specific Learning Disability (SLD) will be discussed. A comprehensive model for dyslexia evaluation including screening, assessment, intervention, and monitoring will be reviewed along with examples of relevant tools.  Models for SLD identification will be explored, relating each model with SLD in reading.  Subtypes of reading disabilities will be identified with an emphasis on linking assessment with appropriate reading interventions.  Finally, practical issues will be discussed regarding the overlap and differentiation between services for dyslexia and SLD in the schools.
