Pre-K and Early Education Collaborative(PEEC) Series: Developing and Sustaining Foundational Reading Skills - A Literacy Based Make & Take



Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20) provides assistance to districts in the successful development and implementation of a school readiness integration model of coordinated funding that brings school districts, Head Start programs and child care providers together in a mixed delivery model.  ESC-20 also provides leadership to ensure the effective regional implementation of appropriate instructional strategies in early childhood settings through technical assistance and professional development in the areas of developmentally appropriate practices and curriculum and supports parents with Pre-Kindergarten information and eligibility criteria.

Important Session Information:


 

Today's session will focus on the three accomplishments that characterize good readers:

  • They understand the alphabetic system to identify printed words

  • They have and use background knowledge and strategies to obtain meaning from print

  • They read fluently

Today we will engage in a variety of ways we can enable young readers to gain proficiency in all of them, including a focus on the requisite skills needed to develop:

Oral language skills and phonological awareness

Motivation to learn and appreciation for literate forms

Print awareness and letter knowledge

Let's explore how to best integrate these elements across different developmental and content areas?   How will they know what books are and how they work? And what are ways to get kids enthusiastic about reading and writing?

Materials for the make and take will be provided.
