From First Words to Written Expression! Building Communication Competence for Learners with Severe Disabilities



ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance for families and professionals working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders in a variety of school settings.

Join Dr. Pennington in this exciting session to learn strategies for developing students’ communication skills within the school environment.

In the second half of the session, the Dr. Pennington will describe the latest research in teaching written expression skills to this unique population of learners. 

Robert Pennington PhD BCBA-D is an Associate Professor and the Lake and Edward J Snyder, Jr. Distinguished Scholar in Special Education. He has over 25 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities, their families and teachers. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2010 and since has published numerous articles and book chapters related to working with persons with ASD and intellectual disability. Robert is passionate about the dissemination of research-based practice and has provided hundreds of refereed and invited presentations to researchers, practitioners, and families. He also currently sits on multiple journal editorial and advisory boards. His current interests involve behavior analytic communication instruction, expanding students’ repertoires in written expression, and improving educational programming for students with severe disabilities.
