Creating Communicators: Using the 3 MODES in the World Language Classroom



The LOTE specialists provide professional development and technical assistance for the purpose of improving the linguistic proficiency of all students learning a foreign language. World language educators are invited to networking sessions. The following areas are targeted: research-based practices in foreign language classroom instruction and testing, the LOTE TEKS, the needs of heritage and non-heritage speakers, and the three modes of communication (interpersonal, presentational and receptive) essential to language acquisition in a proficiency-based classroom.

Communication: The Overarching GOAL! Foreign Language educators across the U.S. are moving from teaching about the language to teaching the language. Participants at this session, will understand how the LOTE TEKS impact classroom lesson planning and daily activities and help achieve proficiency. Throughout this session, participants will distinguish between Proficiency Guidelines and Performance Descriptors with the goal of learning how to embrace being in the target language. Participants will participate in several instructional activities that encompass the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.
