Counseling Services
Helping the Grieving Student

Professional development for counselors is aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards and Competencies and with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Comprehensive, Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Standards (Pre-K - Grade 12). Topics will be addressed to assist school counselors in developing the four components in their school counseling program: Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning and System Support.

School Climate

Important Session Information:

Helping the Grieving Student will address the many dimensions of child and adolescent grief, including perception and developmental relevance.  Suggestions for communication with families, staff, and community will be outlined.  Recommendations for classroom/campus based interventions and issues to be provided, as well as indicators of complex or traumatic grief.


•             Recognizing the physiological, emotional, behavioral and spiritual manifestations of grief.

•             Understanding a child’s perception of death as it relates to the stages of development.

•             Communicating with children and their caregivers about death and dying.

•             Recognizing indicators of complicated or traumatic grief.

•             Communicating with faculty, staff and the community at large.

•             Instituting age and classroom appropriate interventions for grieving students.
