ESC-20 provides training and technical assistance to programs serving students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including assisting programs meet the unique needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing across the continuum of placement options.

Important Session Information:


This session provides an overview of the similarities and differences of literacy development between deaf and hearing children through the five key elements of reading. Phonology and deafness will be reviewed. Also, strategies to support targeted skills in phonemic awareness and phonics to help students who are deaf and hard of hearing move beyond emergent literacy and closer to conventional literacy will be discussed. (This session can be paired with session #58582,

The Five Elements of Literacy and Deaf Education (Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension), that provides information on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in deaf education.)
