The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test–Fourth Edition (WIAT-4: 2020) is a comprehensive
achievement test that assesses oral language, reading, writing, and mathematics. The scores can be used
in conjunction with information from other sources to identify a student’s eligibility and need for direct
specialized instruction. The WIAT-4 offers new subtests including Phonological Awareness, Orthographic
Choice, and Orthographic Fluency to help educators and school psychologists Identify subtype of reading
disability.
This half-day session describes interpretation of data from the WIAT-4 reading and reading-related
subtests.
Participants learn how to use WIAT-4 data to identify the nature of a student’s reading
difficulties, and the interventions that are indicated based on the student’s scores.
As a result of attending this session, participants will:
• Describe the Simple View of Reading and the Direct and Indirect Effects Model of Reading.
• Identify component skills required for reading comprehension.
• Explain types of reading and reading-related disabilities, including dyslexia and dysgraphia.
• Discuss how the WIAT-4 can contribute to screening and identification of students with dyslexia
consistent with the TEA Dyslexia Handbook (2018).
