This session will focus on critical principles of behavior that may be implemented in speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other related service sessions to manage challenging student behaviors. Topics will include the increasing motivation strategies by using observation of social engagement and pairing strategies, the three functions of behavior, de-escalation techniques, and alternatives to escape extinction to develop ready-to-learn skills in students. Role playing and case studies will be incorporated to demonstrate applications of these principles.

- Discuss the Social Engagement Ladder and its applications to planning intervention
- Identify the three functions of behavior and describe how they impact the therapist’s response to a challenging behavior
- Describe de-escalation techniques and alternatives to escape extinction practices in the context of case studies.
