The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates specific actions on school districts before a student may be disciplined. This law protects students who fall under "basis of knowledge", Section 504 and/or special education eligibility. This session will discuss steps to take prior to disciplinary action, the discipline process, differences between mandatory and discretionary placements, mitigating factors and alternatives to suspension.
