Important Session Information:

Community engagement pedagogies, often called “service learning,” are ones that combine learning goals and community service, it is the “doing” with knowing, thinking, and acting as a citizen.

In the words of the National Service Learning Clearinghouse, it is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” Service learning tied to the curriculum enables students to see the connection between working in a soup kitchen and larger issues such as poverty and homelessness and how communities deal with those problems in light of other competing social needs. Join us as we use this pedagogy to help students learn civic responsibility, engagement, and the meaning of being a citizen.
