V. Lynn Small Dunn has been in the deaf education field for forty years and has certifications in special education and elementary education with a Masters in deaf education. Her roles have included teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing, language specialist, curriculum coordinator, and STEM outreach. Ms. Dunn brings her experience and expertise to ESC-20. Participants will be able to identify aspects of language acquisition, identify linguistic structures, demonstrate how to teach structures semantically, identify comma rules and syntax, as well as develop the the skills of the writing process. This session is for teachers who work with students who are deaf and hard of hearing, but the strategies can be used with any student in general education or special education. October 25th: Teaching English from a Semantic Perspective. The first training day will include a brief introduction to
why teaching English to Deaf/hard-of-Hearing(DHH) students is such a challenging task and
some techniques for approaching the task from a bilingual/semantic perspective.
October 26th: Making the transition from the meaning of an English Linguistic Structure to English
Grammatical Concepts. This second training day will include the techniques for engaging students to write
simple, compound, and complex sentences.
