Interpreters need a certain number of CEUs to keep certification current. Ethics-related topics is one area needed for recertification. This session will introduce Demand-Control Schema and Role-Space, and their application to interpreting in the educational setting. Participants will analyze ethical situations and challenge the misconceptions of "that's not my role" and "it depends". The presentation will focus on Demand-Control Schema and the Proposed Constructs as developed by Robyn Dean and Robert Pollard, in conjunction with an introduction to Role-Space as developed by Robert Lee and Peter Llewellyn-Jones. The target audience for this course is educational interpreters.
Objectives:
1. Identify the 4 types of demands faced in ethical decision-making.
2. Identify and articulate controls in response to demands.
3. Identify prioritized/forfeited values and the resultant demands.
4. Identify role space and the planes of interaction management, participant alignment, and presentation of self.
