This course is designed to assist campus administrators, supervisors, and coordinators in understanding the role of the Teacher for Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) and the Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and the unique challenges faced by these service providers in performing their job duties in school, community, and home. With a thorough understanding of the roles of these providers, administrators should be better equipped to support the TVI and COMS on their campuses and their duties.
Course Objectives
- Identify the role of the TVI, COMS and campus staff in evaluating, instructing, and serving a student with visual impairments
- Recognize the diversity of the of special needs within the population of visually impaired students and be able to identify the role of the TVI and COMs on the educational team regarding students suspected or identified as a student with a visual impairment
- Compare and contrast the direct instruction vs collaborative consultation models uses by vision professionals in school, home, and community environments
- Identify solutions or alternatives to overcoming obstacles and barriers impacting the delivery of vision services to students
- Identify educational implications of visual impairments in the general education classroom
