For school psychologists in the U.S., development of cultural attunement must also involve linguistic awareness, that is, awareness of the role of language when providing services to Latino families. Achieving cultural attunement presents a challenge when attending to the complex interplay between language and culture (Verdinelli & Biever, 2009). It is essential for school psychologist to be culturally aware of the language they were trained in, which in the U.S. is mostly exclusive in English, but also in the languages that they are requested to provide services. This training is designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the role of language in the social construction of reality (Gergen, 2015). We will explore how the language we speak shapes our perception, the ways we describe experiences or construe events (Boroditsky, 2011). For instance, “bilinguals change how they see the world depending on which language they are speaking” (p. 65). This is evident during psychological services, in which bilingual and multilingual clients may bring forward different selves when they switch languages (Rolland, Dewaele, & Costa, 2017). Case examples, group activities, and vignettes will be used to explore psychological services with diverse Hispanic cultures in the United States.
This session will be presented by Carlos A. Ramos Ph.D., LMFT, BCaBA.
