This course is intended to provide school system swallowing and feeding team members, including school based SLPs, OTs, PTS, nurses, and classroom staff, with the information necessary to establish and maintain safe, efficient, and enjoyable mealtimes at school for students with disabilities. The session will address the foundations for addressing swallowing and feeding in the schools including:
· knowing why districts must address swallowing and feeding disorders,
· the importance of administrative support, and
· a district-approved team procedure.
The session will also provide information related to service delivery, linking medical teams and school teams, and working closely with parents and caregivers.
Learning objectives:
1. Define swallowing and
feeding disorders, state the signs and symptoms of students at risk and recognize what parents/caregivers may report.
2. Provide 4 reasons why school districts must address swallowing and feeding.
3. Explain the educational relevance of addressing swallowing and feeding in the schools.
4. Identify the necessary components of an interdisciplinary swallowing and feeding team procedure.
