This workshop provided by Central Institute for the Deaf is designed to teach speech-language pathologists and teachers of the deaf techniques to help children with hearing loss listen in everyday situations. Participants learn an overview of skills including: improving auditory memory and comprehension, listening with technology, conversing, listening in noise, localizing sounds and more from the CID SPICE for Life 2.
Participants will be able to:
•Provide examples of auditory tasks and listening environments that can be challenging for children who are deaf/hard of hearing.
•Explain best practices for working with students who use hearing aids and/or cochlear implants for a variety of listening purposes.
•Describe successful methods of selecting goals to improve listening, language, speech and overall social communication.
•Identify appropriate teaching practices to help develop auditory learning in structured lessons for students ages 5-12.
•Describe ways to integrate the development of auditory skills during regular classroom activities.
•Provide examples of strategies to incorporate parent involvement in developing better listening skills for their children in a variety of settings.
•Identify different methods of data collection.
•Analyze student errors and utilize strategies based on the analysis to develop auditory skills.
