The Basics of Literacy Instruction: Supporting Students with Reading Difficulties and Disabilities



ESC-20 provides training and technical support related to inclusive services for students with disabilities to gain access to the general curriculum. These supports provide strategies so students with disabilities are actively involved and progress within the general curriculum and on state assessments.

Important Session Information:


During this three-day series, participants will be introduced to the basics of how children learn to read with a special emphasis put on supporting students with reading difficulties and disabilities. Participants will leave this training with an understanding of the 5 essential components of research based reading instruction and with practical application strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Participants do not require any prerequisite content knowledge to benefit from this training.

Content breakdown by day:

Day 1:  Basic Reading: Phonemic Awareness and Phonics  

Day 2:  Reading Fluency and Vocabulary

Day 3:  Reading Comprehension
