Important Session Information:

A.M.

Ever wonder what it feels like to be in the body of a child with sensory processing needs?  In this morning session, participants will get a sense of how this feels and how it should affect teaching.  As Physical Educators we need to fill our teaching tool boxes with the tools used elsewhere in the school so that our students with developmental delays and sensory processing disorders have structure and routine…examples will be given.  Participants will be able to gain knowledge about how these delays and disorders affect students, and about laws pertaining to students with special needs.  We will also discuss who the experts in our field of Physical Education (PE) are.  Physical Educators need to know how to empower themselves for the success of all students especially our growing population with autism.  This session will also cover the basics of Adapted PE, including how to evaluate, the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process and how services should be provided.  Communication and reward systems will also be addressed in order to create a knowledge base for working with all students with special needs.

P.M.

How do I provide Adapted Physical Education (APE) services to my students if not all qualify for APE?  Participants in this afternoon session will learn the importance and structure of motor labs and how APE can be incorporated.  Sensory integration will be key so participants will get a crash course in all things sensory and how it can be used to help students succeed not only in PE but throughout the school day.  Modified equipment will be introduced in an inexpensive way so participants can leave with ideas on how to meet the needs of all students in the gym.  A question and answer session will be the final portion of this session in order to share ideas, experiences, and problems related to including students with special needs into a general PE program or how to begin to grow an APE program.
