The diverse population in the United States gives all educators the opportunity to work with people from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Even if we do not speak the student’s native language, we can confidently distinguish language differences from disorders. We can also select appropriate goals and implement effective intervention approaches with students from low socio-economic and/or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of how languages interact and the resulting
language patterns in English Language Learners.
- Analyze and interpret results from speech and language samples of English
language learners from different language errors.
- Describe expected versus unexpected errors.
- Describe benefits of using standardized tools and informal measures.
- Evaluate social pragmatic tools and describe the impact of linguistic and
cultural variations on them.
Handouts will be provided electronically 1-2 days prior to the workshop. Please bring a device or printed copies to interact with the handouts during the presentation.
Dr. Kester will also be presenting an afternoon workshop on 12-18-19. See session #63690 for more details.
