The role of the SLP in identifying and treating children with dyslexia continues to expand. As such, SLPs need to increase their ability to identify the core language skills that are correlated with dyslexia in order to identify and treat children at risk for dyslexia. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate the core language skills that are correlated with dyslexia, to identify practical ways to recognize these deficits in children, and to describe activities to be used to improve these core language deficits. This will enable SLPs to identify and treat children at risk for and/or diagnosed with reading disorders more effectively. Additionally, this presentation will provide participants with an actual screening protocol to use to determine if a child needs a further referral for a dyslexia evaluation.
Learner Outcomes:
- Identify the specific language deficits that indicate a child is at risk for developing dyslexia.
- Complete a screening (specific to SLPs) on students from pre-K through high school to determine if the child is at risk for dyslexia.
- Explain how an SLP can provide unique support/early intervention for children at risk for or diagnosed with dyslexia.
