Visually Impaired
Literacy for Students with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI)
ESC-20 provides Supplementary Services for the Visually Impaired (SSVI) in accordance with the comprehensive Regional Plan for Serving Students with Visual Impairments. Specialized training is offered and technical assistance is available upon request.
Important Session Information:
During this Zoom Training, participants will learn about important considerations regarding literacy materials and programs for students with CVI. Attendees will be encouraged to think about the results of The CVI Range (C. Roman, 2018), use of a CVI Overlay (J. Endicott, 2019), use of CVI Core Instruction (salient features, comparative thought, mediated learning) (C. Roman, 2018) and the balancing of task complexity and complexity of the environment (M. Tietjen, 2019) as they examine and make modifications to reading programs and supplemental programs. The National Reading Panel (NRP, 2000) has identified 5 core areas of instruction including; phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency which will also be examined. Combining all of the above considerations is a must when reviewing, choosing and modifying literacy programs for use with students with CVI. This training will show teachers and related service providers how to do just that. In addition, a review of materials to use when creating appropriate books for students with CVI will be shared, including (but not limited to); modified books presented on a tablet, books created from foam core and hook and loop compatible material, books created on waterproof/non-tearable material and simple books on black cardstock.
