This workshop will help Speech-Language Pathologists understand dyslexia in relation to other speech and language disorders, learn ways to identify children in their caseloads at risk for or identified with dyslexia, and to adapt intervention procedures and materials to support their success. Incorporating input from dyslexia and SLP research, participants will explore case studies of children with speech and language impairments who are at high risk for or are identified with dyslexia. Participants are encouraged to have access to an FIE, PLAAFP, and IEP for one of their students who qualifies for dyslexia and speech-language services. Teams of dyslexia specialists and SLPs are encouraged to participate together.
As a result of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
1. Define dyslexia as the term applies in Texas Public Schools and describe its relationship to speech and language impairments.
2. Describe the role SLPs can play in the identification of students at risk for dyslexia.
3. Identify modifications for speech and language therapy procedures and materials that are likely to benefit students with dyslexia.
