Several prevailing myths about adolescents continue to affect speech-language services provided to teenagers in schools. Among them are the myths that language development occurs in earlier years, that problems with language will surface by elementary school, that the academic difficulties of older students are unrelated to language problems, and that secondary services are futile, because the teen years are too late a time period to intervene. A further complication to service delivery in secondary schools is that traditional pull-out models are difficult to structure and ineffective in most instances to address complex language problems. In this session, participants will explore alternative ways to serve adolescents that focus on classroom performance - where the action is! They will analyze key principles in designing and implementing classroom services in collaboration with teachers, explore specific configurations and discuss overcoming problems in providing classroom services in middle, junior, and high school.
